Foot Pain Got You Down?

Foot pain… If there is one thing that can affect your quality life it is experiencing foot and heel pain on a daily basis. The most common reason for foot pain is a condition called plantar fasciitis, typically characterized by excruciating heel pain that is worse in the morning when you first get out of bed and take that first step. The pain can be quite excruciating and sometimes radiate into the arch. You may find yourself trying to find that one way to walk that won’t cause pain.

What is plantar fasciitis and what can you do about it? The bottom of the foot has a group of muscles that allow you to move your toes and surrounding those muscles is a piece of fascia. Fascia is almost like saran wrap or stretch and seal. It’s a thin layer of connective tissue around the muscles. Picture the fascia stretching from the bottom of the heel up to the toes. Now, apply stress to the foot, such as standing all day, working out or wearing poor foot wear. That layer of fascia on top of the muscle starts to get irritated and inflammation builds up in between the muscles and fascia. That inflammation creates tightening of the muscles and starts to pull at the part of the fascia that attaches to the heel. This creates inflammation on the heel. While sleeping the toes relax and when you go weight bearing in the morning that fascia and those muscles need to lengthen and they do not want to do that. It will stretch and lengthen in order for you to walk but you’re going to pay the price because there is going to be pain.

So, how can this be corrected? With a series of chiropractic visits directly treating the fascia and muscles, the pressure on the heel and fascia is alleviated. However, if plantar fasciitis is left untreated a heel spur can develop and unfortunately that cannot be reversed without surgery. It is compared to walking on a pebble for the rest of your life. This is a great example of how procrastination is the thief of health. If you are experiencing heel pain do not let it go. Get it checked as early as possible and relieve the pressure of the heel to prevent a heel spur from starting.
