How to Beat a Heart Attack

According to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, in 2011, more than 66,000 Canadians died from heart disease or stroke. That’s one person every 7 minutes. By adopting healthy behaviours, you can delay the onset of heart disease or stroke by as much as 14 years. Up to 80% of premature heart disease and stroke is preventable by adopting healthy behaviours. So, let’s talk about how to beat a heart attack. The most common method is through a healthy diet, regular exercise and a general sense of good health, which includes regular blood pressure levels.

We all know that this is often easier said than done. Stress is a common factor for many individuals when it comes to heart disease, so de-stressing is key to minimizing the stress on your heart. Keeping stress at manageable levels is important because stress hormones that remain at high levels routinely can cause considerable adverse health effects.  High blood pressure can also be related to other health issues. There are numerous medications that can be used to lower blood pressure. However, medication often comes with side effects, so this is a less-than-ideal option. In fact, some of the side effects of using medication can be adverse enough to avoid taking this route when possible. If someone is on statin drugs they should be taking co-enzyme Q10. Statin drugs significantly deplete the body of this very important enzyme.

There are other holistic methods that can be used, and chiropractic care is just one such way. Chiropractic care can help lower blood pressure to ultimately beat a heart attack. According to a study published in the Journal of Human Hypertension, a chiropractic adjustment that realigned the Atlas vertebra in the spine of patients resulted in a significant drop in blood pressure when compared to those that did not receive the treatment.  The study showed that the effects of the adjustment appeared to be free of any adverse effects, which means it was a significantly safer method of treating blood pressure than the use of medication. Good nutrition and regular exercise are also important to being healthy enough to stave off heart disease. Even just walking in your community three to four times a week can make a huge difference in cardiac health, so moving more is the goal. Not eating enough vegetables and fruit is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Nine in ten Canadians have at least one risk factor for heart disease and stroke. These factors includeeating less than 5 servings of vegetables and fruit a day, smoking, physical inactivity, overweight, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stress.

There is hope! Maintaining five or more healthy behaviours (not smoking; maintaining a healthy weight, regular physical activity, eating a healthy diet; and keeping high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol levels in control) is associated with an 88 per cent reduction in the risk of death from heart attack or stroke. Combine this healthy lifestyle with regular chiropractic treatments and you’re on your way to beating that heart attack!
