Dr. Clayton Roach: The foam roller’s a great little tool. And I’m going to use it today to increase my thoracic extension. The thoracic spine is in the middle of the back, and extension is your ability to do this, which is the opposite of what we do for the most part during the day; you’re going to place the foam roll on the ground, and you’re going to lay on that foam roll, with the foam roll placed between your shoulder blades. You will extend over that foam roll, creating an extension and opening up your chest. In the meantime, another big thing you need to do is increase your ability to rotate across your middle back. This foam roller can roll your arm away from and underneath you. And you’re going to feel great. Stretch in through here as you bring that foam roll away from you. Do this as many times as you feel is comfortable, and you’re going to see a change in your posture and how you feel in your upper back and neck. Enjoy.
